What is an electric longboard?
The electric longboard allows you to move without effort and especially without pollution! It is in fact a motorized skateboard. This equipment is suitable for both children and adults. Be careful however with the maximum speed announced when you think of offering this longboard to a child!
Electric longboards are large boards with wide decks with wheels often with a diameter of at least 90 mm with a rear motor system (single or twin motor) + a lithium-ion battery.
E-skateboards allow you to move fluidly and quickly thanks to the presence of brushless motors and a lithium-ion battery often placed under the deck of the board. This environmentally friendly mode of transport allows for the diversification of electric mobility solutions.
More expensive than conventional electric boards, e-longboards are reliable and robust. Autonomous and fast, the most recent models can go faster than 40km/h. Due to their larger size, they are intended to be used on the road rather than in the city.
These e-skates are more complicated to handle than classic electric skateboards (especially in the city) as their size is 15 to 25 cm bigger and their heavier weight will prevent us from taking them with us on public transport (for city dwellers).
Depending on the use you will have, there are 2 types of electric skateboards. You have the urban model which will allow you to move on a flat and paved ground. And you have the off-road model, equipped with big wheels that will not hesitate to tackle country roads!
The features and components that make up an electric longboard are usually the remote control, the range and battery, the speeds and the power. One of the assets of the longboard remains in its power. In general, longboards can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h, a power made possible by the two engines of the machine.
But what’s really hiding under the deck of a longboard? If you turn it over, you’ll find a powerful electric motor connected to a lithium battery. The power of the battery will depend on the model and the price of the product. Cables will connect the motor and the battery.
The battery powers the motor to produce the movement of the wheels.
Acceleration, propulsion and braking are governed by the wireless control stick that is kept in the hand while driving. This small, portable remote control (which often works with Bluetooth) provides instant access to starting and speed control.
The most recent electric longboard models are usually twin-engine. These two separate engines are usually directly integrated into each of the rear wheels. The longboard’s battery is rechargeable and its charging time varies between makes and models.
Electric longboard or electric skateboard?
The electric skateboard is an electric mobility device with several variants. One of these variants is the electric longboard. The electric longboard differs from a conventional electric skateboard in particular by the larger dimensions of its board. This type of skateboard can be used both as a means of locomotion and as a mount for practicing different urban gliding disciplines. The electric operation of electric longboards allows them to offer even more thrills to their users.
How to choose the best electric longboard
Many users want to buy a cheap electric longboard. However, in order to make a good choice, it is first of all necessary to analyze your personal needs in order to be able to choose the most suitable device. To have a cheap electric longboard, you can either choose a new or a second-hand electric longboard. If you choose to buy a new cheap electric longboard, you should analyze, among other things, whether its autonomy is sufficient to cover your travels. If you use it daily as a means of locomotion, it is always advisable to choose a model whose range is greater than the distance you travel daily.
Before choosing a model, you should also look at other models whose price is within the budget you wish to allocate for the purchase of your inexpensive electric longboard. By looking at several cheap models, you will be able to make the best possible choice.
If, on the other hand, you choose to buy a second-hand unit, it is necessary to carry out a series of very important checks. In particular, check the condition of the battery to see if its autonomy is still satisfactory. It is also important to check the wear of the tires and the condition of the board to make sure that the unit is not damaged.
There are several reasons why you may choose to invest in a longboard. It can be economical, ecological, fun… But above all, if you compare the electric longboard to its predecessors, you will quickly realize that the longboard offers more stability and speed compared to a classic skateboard.
It is more used in glide mode rather than in tricks mode. Nevertheless, longboards can be used for several kinds of associated disciplines:
- trips,
- down Hill (descent of slopes at full speed),
- carving (taking nice curves like surfing),
- boardwalking (close to longboard surfing),
- freeride (alternating descents, tricks and slides),
- slaloms,
- dancing (artistic figures),
- the slides (slides over obstacles) …
Of course, for each discipline, there is a longboard adapted to the length, width, shape, nose, and tail (which allow performing tricks), trucks, concavity (simple, tri-concave, flat), camber (positive if central part raised or negative if central part lowered) and flex (flexibility capacity of the board).
The choice of your longboard will have to take into account the above criteria according to the use you intend to make of it. Other criteria such as design, aesthetics, gums, and grips of the board may also come into play to influence your choice.
To fully enjoy your electric longboard, it is essential to make a good choice. This choice necessarily requires a good knowledge of electric longboards. In order to help you to achieve this, we propose in our analysis, to present you with some important criteria of choice. We will then help you to know more thanks to our frequently asked questions in which we will give you tips to choose wisely a cheap electric longboard.
The criteria we considered to choose the best electric longboards
Motor power, board length, features and wheels are some of the most important criteria for an electric longboard. These criteria are of paramount importance as their knowledge is valuable in choosing the electric longboard that best suits your needs.
The brand
To choose an electric motorized skateboard I advise you to pay attention to different parameters starting with the brand. On my blog, each time I add a test or an electric vehicle in my guides, I pay a lot of attention to the brands I choose. I have personally experienced some difficulties with some “brands” whose names I won’t mention.
The power of the engine
To choose your electric longboard, you must already know who will use it most often. If it’s for a child, don’t take a too powerful board whose top speed will be much too high. Otherwise, for an adult, all models will be suitable.
The engine of a longboard plays an important role in its performance. Before choosing a model of electric longboard that satisfies you, it is essential to consider the type of motor it has and the power rating of that motor.
An electric longboard has either a brushless motor or a brushed motor. However, the brushless motor or brushless motor is the one that offers the most advantages.
Either the skateboard has 2 motors, one in each truck, or 4 motors, 1 on each wheel.
In terms of motor power rating, it makes sense to choose a motor of about 400 watts. You can also choose a higher power since there are motors of more than 700 watts.
The board
To choose your electric longboard properly, you should compare the characteristics according to your expectations but also check the qualities of the board, because most of the time you won’t be able to dismantle the motorized trucks and reinstall them on another board (apart from the motorized kits).
To qualify a skateboard as a longboard, the deck must be over 80 cm (31 inches). Below the waist level and always in the same spirit of urban riding, we then switch to what is called cruisers. In terms of use, longboards are made for long rides and are very stable even at high speed, while cruisers are there for much shorter trips, as your trips in the city for example.
The longboard is very much used for Downhill (high speed descent on a road over a mountain pass) for example, so the board must be long and wide enough to guarantee the user’s balance as much as possible.
We won’t go into details, but be aware that the deck can have several shapes or forms: Wheel Cutout, Single or double kick, or pintail. When viewed from the side, it can be concave, convex, or flat. Finally, when looking at the longboard from the front, it can be concave, flat, or tri-concave.
It is also essential that the board is solid. Woods such as maple, bamboo, or mahogany are fairly strong and impact-resistant materials.
Functionality
The electric longboard can be equipped with a variety of features that make it easier to ride. Electric longboards also make a place for themselves in the rows of connected objects. Some models have technology that allows them to be synchronized with a mobile application. You can, therefore, consult information from your smartphone, in particular information on the speed and range of the device. Electric longboards usually come with a remote control that makes it easier to guide your skateboard.
The wheels
For a longboard, the size of the wheels varies between 60 and 107 mm, knowing that most skateboards are equipped with wheels in 65 and 75, the wider the wheel, the slower it goes. For a good gliding comfort, it would be wise to opt for wheels of about 75 mm.
You can also choose between soft and hard tires. The hardness of a tire is indicated by the hardness index, which ranges from 70a to about 104a. The higher the index value, the harder the tire. Soft tires are good for smooth gliding but are not good for high speed. Hard tires are better for speed and slides but less soft than soft tires.
Trucks
This is the metal part that makes the connection between your wheels and your deck. As you can imagine, they are wider than on conventional skates. To choose your trucks, you look at the width between the two wheels. The greater the distance, the more stable the longboard is, but on the other hand you lose in maneuverability. Purists will also tell you that you have several ways to mount them, but that’s another debate. Now that you know all that, just add a battery and a motor to turn your skateboard into an electric longboard.
The quality of the freewheel mode
Most of the time you can freewheel your electric longboard, but few boards offer a good quality at this level.
The options of an electric skateboard (bluetooth, remote control, etc…)
Electric skateboards have various options depending on the price and the model chosen. Indeed, depending on the size of the skateboard we will talk about either an electric skateboard or electric longboard (if the board is more than 80cm long). This last category is often more full of options, but this is not a general rule.
The options available on electric skateboards are variable, even if there are not that many in the end, unlike other vehicles. Some e-boards without remote control allow Bluetooth connection with an application, others come with a remote control to control them.
Other options exist. One thinks in particular of the rear and front lights. Very useful to be visible at night, they are often red LEDs or other colors that consume very few watts.
Some manufacturers of electric skateboards without remote control allow you to connect your skateboard to a mobile application (see the Airwheel M3 or the Inboard M1). If this is the case, it is then possible to control your electric skateboard either by using the remote control or by using your smartphone via the application.
On the application, you can often steer your electric skateboard without a remote control but you can often access different navigation data that will allow you to find all the useful information such as the battery remaining on your skateboard.
What about all mountains electric longboards?
Also think about how you will use it. If it’s for riding in the city, on very flat and paved surfaces, an urban model will do the trick. Otherwise, you will have no choice but to buy an electric longboard. Here, its big wheels won’t be afraid to ride on country roads!
Electric off-road skateboards with big wheels are usually higher than their city counterparts and have notched air tires, allowing for higher and stickier riding conditions.
The trucks on the skateboards allow the wheels to be held in place and bonded to the board itself. On electric off-road skateboards, these trucks are often coupled with shock absorbers which can bring more comfort to skateboards that will be used on outdoor paths with variable surfaces.
There are two types of electric longboards. You have the models that are exclusively reserved for urban use. To put it plainly: you will have to ride on very flat and paved roads. Otherwise, you will be constantly bothered by stones or other rubbish. But for use in the country, the off-road model is the most welcome. This model has big wheels that are not afraid to roll over bumps! You will undoubtedly appreciate this comfort of movement.
Once again, the goal will not be to go for the cheapest but to choose quality. Your safety is at stake. Moreover, by opting for a well-known brand, you will find it easier to find spare parts the day you have repairs to do. Honestly, you will appreciate getting your trusty longboard back in shape rather than having to buy a new one!
As its name suggests, the urban model motorized skateboard is intended for use on flat and paved surfaces. It is a type of hoverboard that is very similar to the classic skateboard, the only difference being that it is motorized. The advantage with this type of skateboard is its manoeuvrability and lightness, allowing it to be transported anywhere in the city.
As far as electric all-terrain skates are concerned, they are as their name suggests.
They are easily distinguished from the urban models by their imposing wheels. Ideal for adventurers and extreme sportsmen, you can use these models absolutely everywhere.
How do I ride an electric longboard?
Skateboarding was born at the beginning of 1900, but it was quite different from the modern skateboard. It was in the 50s that it took the shape we know today. With the advent of the electric scooter, it is quite natural that skateboarding also benefited from electric assistance. Even though most electric skates can be used just like traditional skates, the addition of an electric power-assist makes a big difference. So here are a few tips on how to use your electric longboard. If you’ve never been on a skateboard before, I advise you to first learn how to control it before switching to electric.
For those who have been skateboarding for years, here are some tips to master the beast. The big difference will be at the start and at the stop of the skateboard. You won’t need to push when you start your skateboard. You won’t need to pump during your ride. Your feet won’t leave your deck from the beginning to the end of your ride. The remote control will allow you to start your skate and choose your speed afterward. It’s the same thing for braking or stopping, it’s the same thing. It’s the remote control that will manage the deceleration.
Don’t be afraid, the stop is progressive. So there is no chance that your skateboard will run out of battery and you will be ejected. Before going for long rides, I advise you to do some tests to understand and control the braking of your skate. The simplest is to do it on an empty parking lot or on a quiet road. Start in a straight line, you will then learn how to make turns. If you have been skating for some time, you should be able to master your electric longboard in less than an hour.
An electric skateboard can be steered in two different ways depending on how it is made.
Most electric skateboards come with a remote control, but some newer models allow you to connect via bluetooth to your smartphone so that it can replace the remote control of the skateboard. Everyone will have his preferences at this level. The actual mode of operation of the electric skate remains the same.
To operate an electric skateboard you just need to recharge the battery of its electric skateboard, then press the button on the remote control indicating forward, and press the button in the opposite direction to reverse. The remote control (or the mobile application, depending on the skate model) is connected in bluetooth to the motors of the electric skateboard, as with a hoverboard skate, the system remains the same.
In terms of the direction to give to the skate no change compared to a traditional skate. It is the direction given by your body that will steer the board.
Here are some tips to control your longboard like an electric scooter. The first advantage of the longboard is that it is very stable even when launched at a good speed, so you can be sure that even being a true adult beginner, it will ride like a roller.
- Firstly, it is important that you adopt the most comfortable static position on the board. To do this, position your feet perpendicular to the skateboard, and align your shoulders so that they are always parallel.
- Secondly, familiarize yourself with the use of the control stick. It allows you to decide your speed (slow or fast), but also to stop. Thanks to the remote control, the braking action will be smooth, which will be a plus for your safety.
- Thirdly, you will have to learn how to steer your electric skateboard. To change direction, simply shift all your weight to the front or back of your ankle.
Explained also theoretically, the practice of longboarding can seem tedious. That’s why we advise you to take inspiration from the tutorials and videos that are available on the web. These tutorials will help you easily assimilate the basics of skateboarding and then take control of your longboard naturally.
What is the autonomy of an electric longboard?
The range of IEDs in general increases over time and with technological improvements. This is therefore also the case for electric skateboards. The latter has a variable autonomy depending on the type of model chosen. Once again it is often the longboards that are at an advantage. As they are made for the road, manufacturers often give them more autonomy.
Even if today the batteries used on gyroskates are often composed of ION-Lithium allowing an optimal speed of energy transfer allowing to recharge the VEI in only a few hours, the capacity of these batteries remains variable. The average available today is about 15 to 20 km maximum range. However, some more expensive models offer higher autonomy of up to 50 km.
What is quite surprising is that the batteries offered on the majority of electric skateboard models are lower than what is offered for the same equivalent on electric single wheel models for example. The price is often more expensive on electric wheels, but less expensive than the price of a hoverboard, this probably explains this, but the difference in the coming years should be less (some Hummer off-road hoverboard models go up to 20 km/h).
The advent of powerful lithium batteries has really helped revolutionize the production of electric skateboards, and almost all new models use them. Of course, some brands still use a classic SLA battery. But the choice will ultimately be based on how you’re going to use your machine.
You should know that the heavier the skateboard, the more powerful the battery will have to be. And so the electric skateboard will cost more.
Also, if you like speed, a very powerful battery, therefore lithium, would be ideal. But of course, the lithium battery does not only have advantages. Compared to SLA batteries, they have shorter battery life. And in terms of lifetime, SLA batteries are much more reliable.
How much does an electric skateboard cost?
An electric skateboard is not the most expensive type of VEI on the market. The price will vary greatly depending on the model and its features but let’s say that a cheap electric skateboard model will be around $250 while a top of the range electric skateboard model can vary from $800 to several thousand dollars for the most expensive.
How old do you have to be to ride an electric skateboard?
E-skating is no more dangerous than classic skateboarding. On the other hand, some models will allow you to go quite fast, which can be dangerous for children.
According to my own experience, a child can start skateboarding around the age of 5-6 years old. As far as driving an electric skateboard is concerned, it is not the same thing, the difficulty is to trust it by giving it access to a motorized vehicle. I would rather advise to wait the 10-11 years old for an electric skateboard.
The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to make your child aware of driving a normal skateboard, then to buy him an electric skateboard, if he likes it (other vehicles exist if the skateboard does not suit him).
Can I take a plane with an electric skateboard?
It is perfectly possible to take your electric skateboard on the plane. As I said in the guide above when I told you about my test of the Trail mini electric skateboard, I could even take it with me in the cabin in my backpack thanks to its small size of 68 cm. You’ll have more difficulty to take electric longboards with you in the cabin, but airlines accept to take them in the hold, as long as you pack them and remove the battery.
Can we go electric longboarding in the rain?
If you use your electric longboard as a daily means of locomotion, then one can legitimately wonder about its use in the rain. For the rider, no problem: a jacket, waterproof pants and a good pair of shoes and you’re done. For the longboard on the other hand, a few precautions are to be taken before launching into this semi-aquatic adventure.
But be reassured, it is quite possible to do longboarding in the rain, whether it is electric or not, provided of course that it is minimum IP54 so that your battery works even with splashes of water. On the deck, it is very often made of wood, so think about adding an extra layer of varnish to avoid any risk of water infiltration. Be careful not to glue the screws of your trucks when you varnish.
Another precaution to take concerns the bearings. These little beasts really don’t like water, so remember to lubricate them regularly. Also, pay attention to the size and hardness of your wheels. If they are too hard and too wide, you risk skidding unintentionally. When you’re done with your riding session, take a few minutes to dry your board and truck to avoid leaving unnecessary water on your board.
On the other hand, do not dry your longboard against a radiator, or even worse near the fire, you risk heating up the glues and irreversibly damage your skateboard. One last thing, it is advisable if you start the adventure of skateboarding in the rain, to perfectly control your machine. This is even more true if it’s about electric longboards because there is a very good chance that you will skid once or twice unintentionally and in the city. The result can then become more than problematic. So take care of yourself.
What is the speed of an electric longboard?
Speed is one of the elements that differentiate the longboard from traditional skateboards. This parameter allows you to climb slopes easily or to travel more or less far. Depending on the kind of longboards and their brand, you can have 2 to 4-speed modes that allow you to push the limit of your riding. Generally speaking, the speed of an electric skateboard varies between 20 and 35 km/h. But recent longboard models can reach speeds of up to 40km/h.
It has been shown, however, that a more powerful motor is not necessarily more efficient. Indeed, if it is badly chosen, it could bring more weight than performance. The key to speed, therefore, lies in the choice of a quality motor, supported by quality mechanical elements. In simple terms, to gain speed with your longboard, the ideal would be to have an Evolve brushless motor.
But speaking of speed, longboard drivers are also subject to the rules of the road. So don’t hesitate to ask for information about the restricted areas for skateboards and electric longboards and the age limits on public roads. We also strongly advise you to wear appropriate clothing when riding your longboard.
In general, electric skateboards with variable speed should have speed ranges from 15 km/h to 45 km/h. If your concern is to travel at higher speeds, this could have a significant impact on the price of your electric skateboard. Electric skateboards with speeds from 15 km/h to 25 km/h are considered the best choice for most users. Those at 25 km/h to 45 km/h are usually for expert skaters because of their very high speed.
What is the weight of a skateboard?
The size and weight of the e-board are very important in relation to its portability. Indeed, it would be very impractical to have to lug around a super heavy skateboard. You might as well buy a scooter. So if you want to get a motorized skateboard for everyday use, those few kilograms will make a big difference.
It is highly recommended to find electric skateboards under 5 kg if portability is one of your concerns. Therefore, longboards and hoverboards will be excluded from your options, as they are the heaviest models, weighing up to 35 kg.
What’s the best way to preserve the battery of your electric longboard?
As we know, the most expensive part, whether it’s for a scooter or an electric longboard, is by far the battery. So we might as well preserve it as much as possible. The first thing to do is not to constantly recharge your longboard. The best is to charge it only before using it. Another tip is not to use the cheap chargers you can find on the internet. Most of the time they do not deliver continuous power.
This can cause your battery to heat up unnecessarily and can shorten its life. You can also forget about speed chargers, because here again, even if you save a little time when charging, you will shorten the life of your battery ⅓. So clearly, the game is not worth the candle.
How do you make your electric longboard?
Before seeing if it is possible to make it yourself, let’s first ask ourselves if it is profitable or not. It is true that sometimes buying the parts separately is much less interesting than buying a complete electric longboard. Well this time the answer is yes, it is more interesting to assemble your own longboard at the price level. And icing on the cake, you will be able to choose your deck and the rest of your parts. Now let’s see step by step how to build it.
- 1st step, the choice of the deck: It’s a little according to the tastes and colors of each one. It is difficult to make a comparison on this point. The only thing to think about is that you absolutely need a longboard to be able to insert the motor and the battery under the deck. The same goes for your trucks, bearings and wheels.
- 2nd step, the motor: two options are available to you. The first option is the motor integrated in the wheel. They are not very powerful and are therefore reserved for cities with little height difference. But this type of engine is to be followed very closely, as their power increases from month to month. The second option: belts are connected to the wheels. In this case, you have many possibilities, 1 or 2 engines. Of course, one engine is cheaper than two. You can also choose more or less powerful engines. It is up to you to define your expectations (power or speed).
- 3rd step, the battery: I won’t give you a long speech about batteries. We all know all the advantages of having a big battery (smartphone obliges). A large battery will allow you to have autonomy and power. But as with engines, the bigger your battery has a large capacity, the higher the price will be.
- 4th step, the essential accessories: to finish your electric longboard DIY, you still need two more things: the VESC which will allow you to manage and control your motor and remote control to control your VESC and therefore your speed.
That’s it, all you have to do is order your parts and wait for delivery. Then, as for an Ikea piece of furniture, you’ll have to assemble the whole thing….
Another alternative: motor kits for electric longboards.
If you prefer a diy electric longboard, you will need to buy an electric longboard kit that will allow you to transform your trusty skateboard into an electric longboard. You will see that there are motors of different powers. Again, it all depends on the main user of this equipment. For children, don’t take too much power. But for an adult, all models of electric longboard motor kit should be suitable, or almost!
Once you have finished transforming your board, you will just have to try it out. You’ll see that you won’t even need your foot to give impulses anymore. Depending on the direction you want to go, you will lean to one side or the other. To stop, use the remote control supplied with the kit. But before you go too fast, take the time to discover this way of piloting.
The electric skateboard kits allow you to transform a classic skateboard into a real motorized skateboard. This type of accessory is easy to mount on any skateboard. Several advantages can be associated with these kits, the first of which is the selling price and the possibility to be interchangeable.
These kits are a little cheaper than the e-longboards already assembled (but not by much). The installation is really simple and everything is provided: battery, motors with motorized trucks, remote control, and mounting accessories.
Leash security
As with any means of transport, there is no guarantee of maximum safety for electric skateboards. On the other hand, it is possible to limit the damage in case of accidents.
One of the best means to this end is Leash Security. What is Leash Security?
It’s a wireless security system that allows you to order your board to stop in case you get ejected from it.
For electric skateboards with a remote control, the Leash Security will be activated with the remote control. For newer models equipped with Bluetooth, the order could come from a Bluetooth remote control as well as a smartphone equipped with the appropriate application.
Spare parts and brackets
It is inevitable that sometimes accidents and breakages occur. And in many cases, it is better to repair your electric skateboard than to buy a new one.
In these cases, it would undoubtedly be necessary to buy spare parts. It is in cases like this that we realize the importance of buying famous brand skates.
In fact, in addition to having help and technical support and warranty, the big brands of electric skateboard production also have the advantage of providing spare parts. Even if this is not the case, it is much easier to find parts for famous brand skates.
Balance of electric skateboards
Many users have reported accidents caused by the unstable balance of their motorized skateboards. In some cases this was due to a lack of training; in many others it was due to the quality of the product itself.
Indeed, especially for the cheapest models, the balance of some electric skates is really precarious. Add to this the frequent breakdowns of the remote controls and the unexpected stops of the machine at full speed, and it is fair to say that some remote-controlled skates are really dangerous.
As far as possible, choose devices that you can test, or that have been tested with positive and satisfactory results.
